ABOUT

Founded in 2013 by Commonfolk Coffee Company, The Cup That Counts is dedicated to creating a sustainable coffee industry.

125 million people, that’s just over 1% of the world’s population, rely on coffee for their livelihood. Our mission is to support projects that invest in the most vulnerable members of this community; whether it’s smallholder farmers in Uganda or unskilled hospitality workers in Australia.

The Cup That Counts partners with organisations that are prepared to shake up the status quo and disrupt the structural forces that dictate how the coffee industry operates. Through these combined efforts we’re working towards an equitable and sustainable coffee industry, ensuring that both producers and consumers benefit from a fairer and more transparent supply chain, and acknowledge the human side to every cup of coffee.

how do we do this

Commonfolk donates 20 cents from every cup of coffee brewed and 20 cents from every kilogram of coffee roasted to support the work of The Cup That Counts. This core funding is bolstered by the tips collected from our dedicated café teams, regular fundraising events, and generous contributions from our wholesale coffee partners. For example, Kua Coffee donates $1 for every kilo of coffee it roasts, directly contributing to our mission.

We also host a variety of fundraising events, including latte art smackdowns, music gigs, and even Christmas Eve olliebollen sales at the Commonfolk roastery. One of our largest fundraisers is Good Coffee Month, that gives other venues and individuals the chance to support a specific fundraising goal. These efforts, along with community donations through tins at participating Commonfolk dealers, create a strong financial foundation that allows The Cup That Counts to make a substantial impact on smallholder coffee farmers and the broader coffee supply chain.
